Wedding rules and regulations are ‘confusing, out of date and restrictive’. Not my words but the words of the Law Commission who published their long-awaited report into wedding law last week. To those of us who’ve been keeping an eye on the progress of this report, it feels like it’s been a long time coming but it appears to have been worth the wait as the Commission has made a clear statement to the government that things to be updated soon if marriage is to keep pace with the rest of society.
Celebrants, venues and those in the industry who are most impacted by the somewhat archaic regulations surrounding wedding ceremonies certainly had a lot to say when the report was published and, in my ‘other’ role as senior writer at Love My Dress, I wrote a reaction piece to the review speaking to celebrants and others. So, overall the review is positive and forward-looking - now we just need the government to put as much energy into legislating for marriages that work for everyone as they seem to have for their own personal culture wars. Here’s hoping…
